Inspection of fuel cell components – bipolar plates and MEA (membrane electrode assembly)

For many years now the fuel cell has been recognized as a sound and sustainable alternative energy source to batteries and electric generators. Fuel cells used in industry are subject to regular checks and appropriate maintenance procedures in order to ensure that they function properly.

 

But fuel cells also have to be treated with great care before they are put into service, i.e. during manufacturing. The cells must be fault-free, but even trained human eyes are not infallible. Now pi4 offers an inspection system that can be integrated seamlessly into production processes. Thus individual cells can be inspected with maximum precision, so that defective cells can be rejected immediately. This, in turn, facilitates work-flow and ensures that your products are of optimum quality.

Inspection systems by pi4 carry out following tasks:

  • cells conveyed from stowage
  • inspection results gathered from other stations
  • results displayed in the customer‘s inspection data-base
  • cells sorted into different containers depending on inspection result

 

Thus it can be seamlessly integrated in an existing production line.

Inspection unit for inner surfaces

Our inspection systems are in a position to reliably check even tight areas, such as inner surfaces of drilled holes or slotted holes.

 

pi4 systems are designed for:

  • detecting coating defects;
  • finding crack formations or flaked materials;
  • controlling for surface deformations.

Inspection unit for cell dimensions

In addition, inspection systems by pi4 carry out measuring tasks for the purpose of quality control, e.g.:

  • measurement by laser;
  • measurement of thickness;
  • check of evenness and parallelism.

Inspection unit for cell surfaces

A thorough inspection is crucial particularly in this area. Here, inspection systems by pi4 carry out following tasks:

  • control of top and bottom surfaces;
  • control for coating defects, crack formations or flaked materials;
  • control for surface deformations.

Inspection unit for cell edges and code-reading unit

Inspection systems by pi4 reliably detect even the smallest production defects, such as:

  • coating flaws,
  • cracks,
  • flaked materials.

 

And, of course, our inspection systems are in a position to read serial numbers of products (e.g. OCR, bar code, etc.).
