Robot pioneer and entrepreneur matthias Krinke has founded the first staff and temporary employment company in the world for robots, especially for mankind-like (humanoid) robots.

 

Robots have been previously been usually purchased or leased by their operators and installed at fixed work stations. The robots have then spend their life separated by protective fencing right up to withdrawal from service. Robozän provides work for robots at industrial customers, after deduction of agency commission and administration fees.

Berlin/Neuruppin, 04.August 2015. The robotics and image processing specialist company pi4 has supplied one of the first workerbot humanoid robots of the second generation to the company PAS Deutschland in June 2013 and the robot has been meanwhile guaranteeing perfect products around the clock. The robot there controls and packs plastic display panels immediately after they have emerged from an injection moulding machine and have been laid down on a conveyor belt. 100 percent control enables fault-free products in highest quality for the worldwide washing machine market. On account of its speed, the workerbot can simultaneously inspect products from 2 unsynchronised injection moulding machines and pack them in trays. The workerbot is capable of working several hours without any intervention by an operator, as it can e.g. fetch new trays from a buffer stock in the production cell entirely on its own.
“By using the workerbot, we underline here in Neuruppin our technology leadership, precisely control excellent product quality and ensure Neuruppin as a production location by ensuring favourable production costs”, stresses PAS Deutschland’s Plant Manager Martin Fuchs. “We decided to use the workerbot because only minimum alteration to the existing production line has been required, due to the humanoid construction, and because the robot can be used flexibly and universally for other tasks with future product changes. Berlin, June 03. pi4_robotics, highly renowned in the photovoltaic (PV) market for the most advanced commercially available fully automatic electro-luminescent (EL) inspection systems, announces availability of its new “pi4-efficiency” series EL inspection products.

 

Thomas Manke, head of the PV business unit at pi4 says “The new pi4-efficiency series follows introduction in 2014 of our pi4 power loss estimation tool”. He explains “This is a tool that determines which defects may cause power loss of a PV module during its life time and this feature has created high response in the market, due to its new predictive features provided by the functionality of the highly sophisticated software used”. 

 

pi4 is now reacting with the new pi4-efficiency series to increased market demands, such as for extremely short delivery times in high quantities, reliable proven German quality standards, best software features and attractive prices.

 

“The new pi4-efficiency series combines our proven concept of short cycle times of ≤20s including handling with a new modular machine concept, which reduces the number of spare parts needed and exposed to wear, saves energy and allows us to supply our customers with more machines in a shorter period of time”, Thomas Manke emphasizes. pi4 offers new EL production monitoring systems for solar module production

Berlin, December 2, 2014. Visualization of concealed damage to solar cells by means of electroluminescence (EL) is a standard procedure today. But how is it used? Mostly, EL images of solar modules are only visualized, an employee trying to look through 60 or 70 EL images every minute on average to find faults, in as far as it is possible to do so. An imprecise inspection process that neither guarantees consistent quality, nor is in a position to control processes where quality is critical. Quality is partly left to chance, partly depending on capability of the technical staff operating the production line. This shows up with the high loss in yield rates of modern production lines. Many solar module producers therefore still produce almost blindly.

 

Growing mass production of solar modules makes comprehensive monitoring systems absolutely essential. The basic prerequisite for this is reliable evaluation of EL images of crystalline solar cells by means of software algorithms, in order to automatically classify all faults arising in production. pi4 is presently the sole company worldwide offering reliable fully automatic inspection systems for multi- and mono-crystalline modules. But that alone does not suffice. Faults arising in production have to be traced back to individual process stages and notified in real time to the corresponding upstream production stations. pi4has created such a system with integration of an AEVAL tool that can be adapted to numerous production environments. Faults are automatically attributed to corresponding processes and reported in real time to the staff, together with specific action instructions. AEVAL has been successfully integrated in more than 10 production locations worldwide since the end

of 2013.

 

pi4 additionally offers EL DiffViewer, as software that automatically compares EL images from different production stations and also reports the faults that have arisen. This fulfills demands for a comprehensive production monitoring system that substantially increases production line efficiency and achieves the conditions required for consistently high quality.

Berlin, 17 November 2014. pi4_robotics sees new product concept confirmed at Fakuma and Motek 2014. For the first time, a turnkey production line was presented with partners EHLEBRACHT and IMPACT COATINGS.


Time taken to start-up on the Fakuma fair stand amounted to only one working day.


Demanding 3-dimensional sample demonstration parts were produced directly on the Fakuma fair stand in an injection mould from EHLEBRACHT on an Engel injection moulding machine and passed to a workerbot3 robot from pi4 equipped with integrated optical part position and orientation recognition. The robot laid the demonstration parts in the PlastiCoater 200 PVD coating equipment from Impact Coatings, where the injection mouldings received a homogenous thin chrome coating. The workerbot3 then took the coated parts, checked the optical quality with an inspectoid-M1 inspection system from pi4 and laid down the inspected parts in a tray system.

Berlin, 28 October 2014. pi4’s third generation pi4_workerbot humanoid robot received one of five 2014 innovative application category “handling awards” in a public presentation at the 34th Motek fair for production and assembly automation in Stuttgart in October 2014.

 

“We are very pleased about the award and feel it confirms our work on the new generation robot. It is a wonderful feeling”, observed pi4 Managing Director Matthias Krinke.

 

It was the first time this year at Motek 2014 that the editorial team of Handling magazine presented its “Handling Awards” at a Motek fair, together with Motek organiser P. E. Schall GmbH & Co. KG. The award went to excellent products and system solutions in the area of production and assembly automation, as well as to novelty in specific areas of handling, material flow, conveying and robotics.

 

An independent jury of production and assembly automation industry experts evaluated the submitted applications and chose the winners. The jury members justified their prize award decisions for each of the selected most technically convincing applications among all those that had been submitted. The evaluation criteria were primarily novelty and innovation value, customer benefits, sustainability and market potential of the submitted applications. The technologies used had to be ready for operation and usable by the time of Motek 2014.

pi4 gets orders from Mexico, India, France and South Africa

Pi4, a Berlin based enterprise specialized in quality testing and monitoring systems for pv-module manufacturing, received several orders for electroluminescence testers from Mexico, India, France and South Africa in the third quarter of 2014. From Mexico alone came an order of six fully automated EL inspection systems. Thomas Manke, head of the solar department at pi4:

“Our EL systems have convinced customers with the accuracy of automated inspection of multicrystalline solar cells but especially with new features like Power Loss Estimation”. This in-house developed and patented technology provides a prediction of power loss for solar cells and modules based on already existing defects, especially so called micro cracks. Micro cracks can cause power loss by disconnecting cell areas from current flow.

 

“After the severe crisis in the solar industry and the outsourcing of production from Germany, we are now operating on a global scale” explains Manke. The demand for PV modules is rapidly growing worldwide and with that the need for quality testing and production monitoring systems.

During the 32nd Motek from October 7th to 10th, robotics and machine vision specialist pi4 presents its enhanced robot pi4_workerbot 2.1 (hall 1, booth 1134). “Today's customers expect low prices, highest quality, and short lead time along with continual product innovations – and this is exactly what our humanoid robot pi4_workerbot 2.1 makes possible. pi4_workerbot 2.1 is still the first operative humanoid factory worker worldwide that can be acquired by purchase”, emphasizes pi4 managing director Matthias Krinke (M. Eng.),


“Our robot is adaptable to different tasks and locations. It is the answer to the latest
requirements concerning highly flexible manufacturing and so realizes the
philosophy of the Industry 4.0 . Due to its universal usage pi4_workerbot 2.1 allows
an economical production in Europe and this way protects the European economy;
perhaps it can even help to retrieve a certain amount of production.”


On account of their “seeing hands”, the new generation of robots has an even wider range of possible usage; they can detect if a working piece lies in a wrong position and reposition it where necessary. Their loading capacity has been increased to 10 kilograms per arm with the arm's length amounting to 1.3 meters. Along with an additional rotary axis in its waist, it enables pi4_workerbot 2.1 to autonomously supply material to its working place, which is to say, it can independently load and unload trays with working pieces to and from its table. Due to integrated force monitoring sensors the robot can also be employed for working in cooperation with humans – it is equipped with a highest-class safety technology.

 

Its face – a unique communication interface that can be easily understood everywhere in the world – allows users with any cultural background to sense the robot's current status at once and without the necessity to study its instruction manual first. This mobile device can quickly be brought to a new working place in a factory, like a stand-in worker in a company. “The cooperation with international leasing banks allows us to lease the robot for less than a 'monthly salary'”, accentuates the pi4 managing director Matthias Krinke.

 

The robot has a mobile platform that contains its entire control technology. Thus the robot can be very flexibly used at different work stations in manufacturing. With the help of its two arms pi4_workerbot 2.1 can very efficiently carry out even complex movement application. Example – it can easily carry out assembling tasks without any additional retaining device, just using its both arms. Integrated image processing and force sensors allow to carry out “delicate” assembling tasks with simultaneous quality control of the processed semi-finished and final products.

the beginning of 2013.


This tool is able to decide which defects may cause power loss of the module
during life time and which defects will not cause much loss of power
ever. Especially cracks parallel to the bus bars tend to isolate cell areas
(example), whereas cracks parallel to grid fingers will not interrupt
current flow to the bus bars.


Pi4 EL Power Loss Estimation is easy to parametrize and works in three steps:
- EL Power Loss 1 – capture the current state of power loss
- EL Power Loss 2 – Power loss estimation with cell aged, micro cracks turned into
active cracks
- EL Power Loss 3: Power loss estimation with cell aged, crack and grid finger error growth
assumed


The gradual determination of inactive areas in multi- and mono crystalline pv
modules enables the conclusion on current state and above all on power loss to
be expected in future. Precondition for all is the reliable automated detection of
defects which pi4 has introduced in the market since years.

Innovation! Table Flasher system with EL inspection

In cooperation with h.a.l.m. elektronik, a flasher expert, pi4 has developed an innovative EL Table Flasher system for PV panel manufacturing. It is a compact in-line system that unites high-class flasher technology and fully automatic electroluminescence inspection. Modules enter with the sunny side down on conveyours with a typical belt level of 900 mm or higher, which ensures an easy integration into new or already existing production lines. Additional handling of panels is superfluous.

 

pi4 and h.a.l.m. elektronik will introduce the new systems on PVSEC 2012 from September 25th through 28th in hall 3, booths J59 and H20.

 

 

 

 

Flexible feeding - now even more cost-efficient

Once more, pi4 has successfully enhanced the flexible feeding of product series pi4_robofeeder. This, in turn, additionally boosts pi4_robofeeder's overall performance. Besides, we could significantly reduce its costs. And we will pass all these benefits along to our customers - that goes without saying.

New Features

for automatic inspection of solar modules – pi4 has equipped its EL systems of the Automatic series with fully automatic adaptation to varying dimensions of PV products.

From now on, our EL tester adapt automatically to different sizes of PV modules. All module dimensions as well as other product parameters are conveyed via according interfaces from production lines to the inspection system. Therefore a manual adjustment of the conveyor system is no longer required, which means no time loss on account of modifications and hence more flexible production.
